"Pupils are proud of their school. They respect their teachers and appreciate that they help them to achieve their best. They feel very safe because they know that adults listen to them and care about them. OFSTED 2020"

Our Curriculum

Science

At West Haddon we encourage all children to be excited about and interested in all areas of Science. Teachers develop children’s scientific knowledge and understanding of the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics by delivering engaging science lessons which allow all children to be involved in collaborative, practical scientific investigations. Our aim is to equip children with the science knowledge they need to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. At West Haddon we provide children with many ‘awe and wonder’ moments throughout the year, in science lessons and during British Science Week.

Working Scientifically skills, taken from the National Curriculum, are promoted in each science lesson and they are built upon in each year group:

Curriculum Map for Science

Across school, we use Developing Experts as our curriculum framework which follows the 2014 National Curriculum. The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

The Developing Expert scheme seeks to link science learning with real world-career progression pathways. It also aims to help children become exceptional critical thinkers and problem solvers; essential skills that are needed in the world of work.
